PES Women President Zita Gurmai warmly congratulated Marusya Luybcheva for her appointment as Member of the European Parliament. Marusya Lyubcheva has officially started her new function in the European Parliament yesterday. She replaces MEP Kristiyan Vigenin who has resigned from the European Parliament after being appointed Foreign Affairs Minister in the BSP-led government of Prime Minister Plamen Oresharski in Bulgaria.

Ann Linde, head of the PES International Policy Unit met today in Brussels with Ann Dismorr, director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) in Lebanon.

Next week the PES will convene its Council in Sofia on June 22nd.
The Council will set the PES agenda for the months ahead and will kick-start the preparations for the 2014 EU elections. During the meeting, PES leaders and delegates will present concrete proposals to develop a European industrial policy based on innovation and a highly skilled work-force and will call for the quick implementation of a European Youth Guarantee.

On 21 June, prior to the PES Council in Sofia, Bulgaria, PES Women will hold its annual conference “Women up! Against the Crisis”. This event will bring together politicians, trade-unionists, NGOs and researchers in order to discuss the “silent crisis” resulting from the austerity-only approach, which hit women more harshly.

The Party of European Socialists held the first session of the PES Media Network last Friday (7 June) in Madrid, Spain. Hosted by the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) at its headquarters in Ferraz Street, the meeting was chaired by Marije Laffeber, PES Deputy Secretary General and Responsible for Communications. Ms Laffeber emphasized that the network “will be essential to the strategy for next year’s European elections”.
